Biometric Data Notice and Consent
How the facial-matching feature works, and what it does and does not keep.
Notice
Beacon Meetup, Inc. (“Beacon,” “we,” “us”) offers a liveness check: a short face scan, taken with your device’s camera, that confirms a real, live person is present at that moment. Its purpose is to keep automated accounts and impersonation attempts — bots, and people using a photo, a video replay or a mask — off the Services.
The liveness check does not identify you. It does not compare your face to your profile photo, to any other person’s face, or to any database. It is not identity verification, it is not a background check, and it does not confirm that any user is safe, trustworthy, or who they claim to be.
What we collect and how it is processed. When you take the check, your device streams a short sequence of camera frames directly to our provider, Amazon Web Services (“AWS”), using Amazon Rekognition Face Liveness. Those frames do not pass through Beacon’s servers. AWS analyses them in real time and returns two things: a status (pass or fail) and a numeric confidence score. We receive nothing else. We do not create, collect, or store a face template, faceprint, or other biometric identifier, and neither we nor our provider retains any facial image after the check completes — the feature is configured so that our provider writes no reference or audit images at all. To the extent this momentary processing involves biometric data, we treat it accordingly and handle it as described here.
Purpose. We use the liveness check only to confirm that a real, live person is completing the action, and to detect and prevent automated abuse, impersonation, and fraud on the Services. We do not use it for any other purpose. If we later introduce a feature that uses biometric data differently — for example, one that compares faces to one another — we will provide a new notice and obtain your consent again before doing so.
How long we keep it, and destruction
We do not retain biometric data. The check is performed in real time and returns only a status and a confidence score; no facial image and no face template is stored by us or by our provider for this feature. We retain the status, the confidence score, and an opaque session identifier only as part of ordinary account and security records. We maintain and follow a written policy under which no biometric identifier or biometric information is retained beyond completion of the check, and in all events any biometric data would be permanently destroyed when the initial purpose has been satisfied, when you delete your account, or within three (3) years of your last interaction with us, whichever occurs first.
We do not sell or profit from your biometric data
We do not and will not sell, lease, trade, or otherwise profit from your biometric data.
We do not disclose it without your consent
We do not disclose, redisclose, or otherwise disseminate your biometric data unless: (1) you consent; (2) it is necessary to complete a transaction that you requested; (3) disclosure is required by state or federal law or municipal ordinance; or (4) disclosure is required by a valid warrant or subpoena issued by a court of competent jurisdiction.
Service providers. We use Amazon Web Services (AWS), through Amazon Rekognition Face Liveness, to perform the check. Your camera frames are streamed directly from your device to AWS. AWS processes them transiently and only on our instructions, to return the status and confidence score, and is contractually required to protect the data and not to retain, use, or disclose it for any other purpose.
How we protect it
We store and transmit biometric data using a reasonable standard of care and in a manner at least as protective as the way we store and transmit other sensitive information.
If the check does not pass
You may try the check a limited number of times. If it still does not pass, your account may be placed in a review queue, and a member of our team may review your account before deciding whether to grant access. They do not review any image of you, because no image of you is kept.
Your choice
The liveness check is optional to the extent described in the app. If you do not wish to provide biometric data, do not complete the liveness check; note that certain features may be unavailable to you as a result.
Consent
By ticking the box below and continuing, you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Biometric Data Notice and Consent, and you voluntarily provide your written consent and release for Beacon Meetup, Inc. and its service provider to collect, process, and destroy your biometric data as described above.
